Beautiful Boise!

Hello!

Did you know that Boise was actually named after the French word for TREES?  We didn’t, until we took our trolley tour this afternoon around some of the neighborhoods in Boise!  And there are some really stunning neighborhoods!  The only complaint I can register is that Boise is built on the banks of the river, and unless you get to one of the public parks, you barely even see what is a really lovely river!

But to start with this morning…up about 5:30 am and watching the Tour de France about 5:31 am.  It was a really stressful stage – one of the riders broke away from the entire field, and with something like 5 km to go, had at least a 30 second lead! Everyone from the broadcasters to the fans in Boise (us!) really wanted this guy to win – but he started his sprint too soon, and came in third.  Bummer! However, this really was a shakeup day for the GC (general classification) riders, and one of “my” riders (in the fantasy cycling world I belong to) is now in front and in yellow! Neat!  YEAH!

Okay … the race was over about 9 am and we decided to head out to the car wash and to a local Albertsons.  I wanted to pick up laundry things and water and a few other odds and ends (our picnic supplies have just about run out, and what would life be without cheese??).  From there, we decided to just drive around Boise, and its suburb area of Garden City.  We figured that we saw some things yesterday on our drive, and would see more “official” sites this afternoon on our trolley tour, but enjoyed driving around the areas.  Finally, around 11, we decided to head to Costco to gas up the car (for our drive tomorrow to Idaho Falls) and look around.  Well … turns out that quite literally, from our hotel windows (although we didn’t know it!) we can actually see Costco and all of its services!  This Costco was a bit different than others, as it had a separate garden center as well as a car wash!  Who knew?  Figured also that we could pick up hot dogs for lunch which of course, at $1.50 each, didn’t put much of a dent in the family food budget for the day!

Got everything back inside, and then rested a bit watching the U.S. Open.  Left for the trolley tour around 1:15 pm.  Of course, they wanted us there 15 minutes before (1:45 pm) but R does like to be prompt – we were there at 1:30 and I think the trolley pulled in about 5 minutes to 2!

There were eight of us in total on the open trolley, and we had such a lovely breeze with the sides open; very much enjoyed it!  We heard the story of the immigrants and settlers and learned about the different building styles of early Boise.  I particularly liked the block, Warm Springs, where the houses were all heated by thermal steam!  Very appropriate, I thought.

Now back at the hotel, watching tennis (Djokovic was defaulted for hitting a linesperson with a temper-fueled tennis shot!!!! Yeah!!)  Not for hitting the linesperson, but for the fact that FINALLY Djokovic is being held responsible for his actions!  Should have happened a long time ago!

Moving on … now ready to head out to dinner!  So – more later!

Just back from Kyoto Steakhouse, where we had a wonderful Japanese dinner.  Started with an order of vegetable tempura, which was just out of the fryer…VERY hot! Then came some wonderful onion soup and then a salad.  Finally, our meals – fried rice with filet mignon and shrimp combination dinner. Everything was great, and we really enjoyed it!  I really do hate to mention it, but we did stop at Dairy Queen on the way back … for a chocolate dipped vanilla cone … great way to end the day!  Obviously not great for my diet, but that will be for another day!

Home about 6 and for sure to bed early tonight.

Tomorrow, laundry first thing and then we’ll be off to Idaho Falls for a couple of nights!

Love all,
